Chapter 9 – Project Management

               Executive Overview

The IT Project Management Office provides project management services, oversight, tools, and
guidance for technology-based initiatives across the District. The IT PMO will continue to
incorporate project management methodologies based on the key principles from the Project
Management Institute (PMI.org). An IT Division approved Project Management methodology
framework has been instituted to drive the Division’s maturity level higher. The IT PMO has
proven critical to providing technology assessments, project management oversight and
services, and successfully delivering critical projects for the IT Division and District overall.

The Future of the IT PMO
The IT PMO will continue to expand the content available on the IT PMO Center for Excellence
Sharepoint site to provide best practices, templates, forms, and other PM-centered content to
allow District Departments to adopt, develop and implement their own projects. The IT PMO will
assist with helping to determine the right tools and approach. The IT PMO will adapt and adopt
new project management methodologies as they develop and mature.

A project review process exists to ensure that selected technology projects are aligned with the
District's strategic priorities and processes. The IT Division and IT PMO will continue to support
and implement monitoring practices for the successful execution of technology initiatives. These
monitoring processes will, by necessity, be flexible and accommodate unanticipated shifts in
priorities and needs. As new needs arise and requirements change, the strategic priorities will
be updated, and projects will be routed through the vetting or project selection process.

As District departments replace manual processes with applications and automation, we
anticipate greater demand for the services of the IT PMO and for the project management
methodology overall. We stand ready to build upon our past successes and extend the
acceptance of PMO best practices across the District.
