CRUNCH Event
On Friday, October 30, 2020 in celebration of National Farm to School Month, the SFS Department partnered
with the UF/IFAS Extension FNP to host a District-wide Virtual “CRUNCH” Event to encourage students to try
locally grown produce and learn more about Florida agriculture.
Sixty-one (61) schools participated in the virtual event which included a taste test with all students crunching
sugar snap peas simultaneously during the big “1, 2, 3, CRUNCH!” The UF/IFAS Extension FNP developed a
variety of resources to help schools celebrate including an event toolkit with ideas and activities, coloring
pages (for cucumbers, sweet corns, sweet potatoes, oranges, tangerines and more), promotional materials,
social media graphics, and an educational video for students.
Overall, 40,000 packages which is 5,000 pounds of sugar snap peas were CRUNCHED! One SFS Manager
shared, “We…handed out the snap peas to the students at lunch time and a lot of the students didn’t know
what they were and were trying them for the first time. Many of the students said they liked them and would
eat them again!” - Jeannette Southard, SFS Manager at Frontier Elementary.
