The COVID-19 pandemic presented many challenges. With the closing of all schools in the District on March
13, 2020, School Food Service (SFS) Department remained open and committed to feeding all students in
our community. Our continued efforts to feed children put a great strain on our resources as we experienced
a drastic reduction in our daily meal reimbursements from the local and federal governments and served
significantly less meals than in a normal school day, and what we served was at no cost to the families.
To cover some of these expenses, the SFS Department actively pursued grants and in-kind donations to assist
us in obtaining funding, equipment, and supplies required to maintain continuity in providing meals while
ensuring the health and safety of our students, families, and staff. This effort resulted in more than $3.3
million in funding and donations from the following sources:
Action for Healthy Kids
Dairy Council of Florida – Florida Dairy Farmers
Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services
GENYOUth
School Nutrition Foundation
Share Our Strength – No Kid Hungry
Economic Council of Palm Beach County, Inc.
Education Foundation of Palm Beach County. Inc.
Palm Beach County – Board of County Commissioners (CARES Act funding)
Urban School Food Alliance
Tyson Foods
Funding provided by the Palm Beach County’s Board of County Commissioners from the CARES Act allowed
us to provide fresh produce to our families. 10-12 pound boxes filled with fresh fruit and vegetables were
distributed to families picking up Grab-and-Go meals and participating in afterschool programs. The SFS
Department also provided produce boxes to parents dropping off and/or picking up students at brick and
mortar sites at planned events during National Farm to School Month in October 2020, and meal distribution
events before the Thanksgiving and Winter Holiday breaks. We are proud to say that in 16 weeks, we
distributed more than 722,000 pounds of produce.
