COMMUNITY
OneBlood, Inc. in Schools
During FY22, School Food Service facilitated formal communication with OneBlood, Inc. to assess and
support their goal to educate and provide the value of blood donation and set ‘Blood Drives’ in the District. A
cross-functional team was developed to support this initiative. The following is a list of the departments who
have assisted:
9 Communications and Engagement
9 General Counsel’s Office
9 Planning and Intergovernmental Relations
9 Risk and Benifits Management
9 School Police
9 School Transportation
9 School Food Service
A bulletin was issued to communicate to our internal stakeholders (High School Principals and Directors)
the importance of blood donations for the community, and the protocols and processes to establish them
at school campuses and District facilities through our eBusiness Partnership Agreement (PBSD 1570) with
OneBlood, Inc.
The District’s partnership with OneBlood, Inc., the not-for-profit blood center serving Florida and much of the
southeastern United States, taught students the important role they hold in saving lives by becoming blood
donors and instilled in them a sense of community responsibility. In addition, OneBlood, Inc. provided the
District with an Educational Assistance and Scholarship Program.
Did You Know?
● High school and college students account for approximately 25% of the nation’s blood supply.
● Every two seconds someone in the United States needs a blood transfusion.
● Cancer patients, premature babies, sickle cell patients, trauma patients and transplant patients, just
to name a few, depend on blood transfusions to live.
Donating Blood Provided Health Benefits for the Students and Staff:
¾ All blood donors received a complimentary wellness checkup.
¾ A wellness checkup included blood pressure, pulse, temperature, iron count, and cholesterol
screening.
¾ Donating regularly helps improve blood flow and can result in fewer arterial blockages. In fact, some
studies have shown that men who donate at least three times a year can drastically reduce their risk
of having a heart attack or stroke
