Alternative to Suspension Courses for Substance Use
These programs provide students with the option of completing a fully online 3.5-hour course if they have
been suspended for alcohol, tobacco, vaping, or other drugs. By completing one of the two online courses,
students suspended for substance use can hold up to three days in abeyance of a five-day suspension.

alcohol or drugs completed the District’s AOD course, which contains information about alcohol, marijuana,
prescription drugs, e-cigarettes, and addiction.

Neglected Group Homes Educational Supports and Services
The Safe Schools tutorial program provides after-school tutoring and mentoring for students who reside
in neglected residential group homes scattered throughout Palm Beach County. The primary goal of this
program is to provide quality supplemental academic support to increase academic proficiency and close
the achievement gap between neglected and non-neglected students. District-certified part-time teachers
serve as tutors utilized researched-based instructional materials, current student data, and effective learning
strategies to help students excel academically.
Nearly all group home students have faced significant trauma, while some are also extremely transient.
These two challenges can greatly impact educational progress, and the tutorial program operates with these
students’ unique needs in mind. The tutors utilized evidence-based tools designed to improve the academic
performance of at-risk and highly-mobile students as well as analyzed educational data to help identify and
ameliorate specific skill deficits.
The structured tutoring program focuses on skill remediation, computer-assisted instruction, mentoring,
and homework assistance. Each group home operates differently, but the missions are similar in offering
comprehensive programs and ongoing residential treatment. The tutorial program is flexible, adaptive, and
works in partnership with eligible neglected facilities to provide quality educational service to meet the varied
needs of these students.
