Health Services Amid COVID-19
Amid the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Health Services continued to offer a variety of health training in
which staff members were trained under the guidance and training of licensed health professionals. Health
Services also coordinated in collaboration with the District’s contracted nursing agencies, student-specific
nursing training for staff members in the administration of medications and/or procedures to students. This
valuable relationship allowed a great number of students to remain in school while receiving appropriate
nursing care.
The Superintendent’s Health Advisory Committee for The School District of Palm Beach County was composed
of medical professionals, School District personnel and community leaders. The Health Advisory Committee
convened several times in the 2020-2021 school year and it provided guidance to the Superintendent based
on the most current COVID-19 data, guidelines, and recommendations from federal, state, and local health and
government entities. This collaboration contributed to the creation of COVID-19 protocols and procedures for
students and staff which resulted in schools and individual classrooms remaining open for in-person learning
during the 2021-2022 school year.
School Health Partners Collaborative Efforts
to Mitigate the Transmission of COVID-19 in the School District
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the School Health Partners and the FDOH Epidemiology Department
continued weekly debrief meetings during FY22 to collaborate on efforts to mitigate the transmission
of COVID-19 in schools. The School Health Partners and the FDOH Epidemiology Department convened
each week to discuss updates on the COVID-19 virus including vaccination efforts, to review and suggest
modifications to improve School District COVID-19 policies and practices that can reduce risk of transmission
of COVID-19 among administrators, staff, and students and to implement plans for appropriate reporting of
positive and/or exposure cases.
As a result of the collaboration between the School Health Partners and the FDOH Epidemiology Department,
schools operated safely during the 2021-2022 school year. In addition, the District had no school or classroom
closures.
Extended Learning Nursing Contracts
The Department of Extended Learning (Afterschool Programming) has contracted with District-approved
nursing agencies to manage training and supervision of afterschool site staff responsible for medically-
involved students. This ensures comprehensive coverage of all medically-involved students enrolled in
afterschool and winter, spring and summer camps
