53Going Green: A Sustainability InitiativeIn FY25, the Green Initiative was launched to enhance SFS commitment to environmental sustainability by reducing noncompostable waste. The primary objective was to reduce the use of Styrofoam trays and plates by at least 25% across 16 pilot sites. To achieve this, they monitored foam usage and replaced foam products with durable compostable plates or 5-compartment trays at these schools. The deparment also conducted a successful pilot program with Tellus Products, testing new plant fiber trays and plates at Addison Mizner School and Seminole Ridge Community High. Both alternatives were well received by students and staff, reinforcing the potential for broader implementation of compostable alternatives in school cafeterias. As a result of these efforts, the School Food Service (SFS) Department achieved a 40% decrease in the use of foam trays and plates at their pilot schools, significantly exceeding our initial 25% goal.Earth Day Call to ActionTo celebrate Earth Day 2025, SFS held a District-wide initiative to promote sustainable habits. A key component was replacing foam lunch trays at all schools with environmentally friendly bagasse fiber trays on April 22nd. Schools received sufficient trays to service their entire student population, along with new posters and marketing materials to promote awareness. Schools were also encouraged to reduce waste by limiting pre-packaged items in favor of whole fruit options. Schools were also provided with a series of engaging morning announcements designed to spark student curiosity around sustainability. These short %u201cfood for thought%u201d messages covered topics such as:%u2022 Recycling %u2022 The impact of single use plastics%u2022 Sustainable habits at home Sustaining Our EffortsBased on the successful piloting of compostable products, we are looking toward the future to continue our sustainability efforts. Our non-food bid solicitation efforts for FY26 focused on increasing vendor participation in the compostable category. This resulted in a notable increase in vendor bids, marking a positive and proactive step toward expanding sustainable options within our procurement process.Nutrition Environment & Services
