Exceptional Student Education Parent University
The Department of Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Parent University is a beacon of inclusivity, offering a variety
of parent training events, support, and resources in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. Parent Universities extend
beyond their weekly offerings with monthly events on Saturdays. This ensures all parents can participate. In addition, the
Department of ESE extends its support to parents and families by providing outreach and awareness through the District’s
Welcome Center, at local community events, and in collaboration with other local agencies. In FY24, the department was
proud to engage with FAU’s Center for Autism and Related Disorders to provide additional support to Spanish-speaking
families through focused parent support groups. The department also helped over 600 families register for Special Ed
Connection, a free resource for parents of children receiving special education services. The FreshDesk Parent Help Ticket
System tracked over 1,000 parent contacts for the FY24 school year.
Topics include:
• Parenting a Child with Special Needs
• Behavior Management Strategies
• Supporting Students During the Assessment Window
• Child Find and ESE PreK Programs
• What is an Individual Education Plan?
• Everything You Want to Know About ESE
• Secondary Transition
• How to Encourage Home Learning
Over 500 parents of students with disabilities participated in one or more events in FY24, a testament to the success and
impact of the ESE Parent University. This participation is a clear indication of the trust and confidence parents have in this
program.
