THREE IMPORTANT
INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
The IT Infrastructure Department remains in a constant state of upgrades
and replacements at more than 200 sites District wide. Three major projects
were kicked off this year; Wireless Access Points, Data Cabinet Upgrade,
and Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Refresh. These three projects will
continue for a period of 5 years and will focus on the school/District needs and
rapid network demands.
Wireless Access Points will be updated to the latest technology, commonly
referred to as WIFI6. This technology not only provides our students and
employees with better performance and speed, but also enhances coverage
in more densely populated areas such as gymnasiums and auditoriums where
mass testing and large gatherings occur. Additional coverage is being added
to external areas and bus loops as well.
The Data Cabinet Upgrade is a complete swap out and will better meet
our needs with today’s technology. Newly installed Chatsworth cabinets will
provide more room for switches and UPS installation, better noise reduction,
and internal fans designed to help keep the cabinets cool. The new cabinets
will also provide improved cable management capabilities. Overall, these will
be a great improvement over the current data cabinets.
The third project is the massive undertaking of Upgrading the
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) at all sites. After installation, District
sites that experience brief power outages will retain networks, phones,
wireless, and internet services during these times. The new UPS uses a
lithium battery, allowing our systems to remain in power for a longer duration
due to a power outage. Lithium batteries also have a longer lifespan of up to
five years, having to be replaced much less frequently over time.
