                                    166 SUPERINTENDENT ANNUAL REPORTCOMMITMENT TO A HEALTHY LEARNING AND WORKING ENVIRONMENTThe District maintains strict compliance with environmental regulations to ensure that students and staff work in healthy, secure environments. These proactive measures safeguard surface water, soil, air, and drinking water. Conservation efforts also focus on preserving natural areas and protected species on District properties, including gopher tortoises and burrowing owls.Central to this mission is the proper management of hazardous materials and the promotion of safety through education for teachers and students. During FY26, the Department of Environmental & Conservation Services (ECS) successfully diverted the following materials from traditional waste streams:%u2022 62,470 mercury-containing light bulbs%u2022 12,682 pounds of reusable batteries%u2022 4,496 pounds of oil-filled lighting ballasts%u2022 7,620 pounds of latex paint captured for reuse%u2022 154.18 tons of electronic wasteBeyond waste management, the District maintained natural areas across 12 properties and ancillary facilities. These spaces provide immersive learning environments that promote natural resource conservation. ECS also ensures facility safety through indoor air quality monitoring and rapid emergency response. For example, during the July 2025 holiday weekend, ECS responded to a major flood at L.C. Swain MS. Specialized teams performed emergency remediation and restoration, ensuring the campus was fully restored before the new school year. By March 2026, ECS staff had addressed 462 assessment requests and completed 305 projects. Additionally, ECS provided enhanced sanitization for 74 infectious-disease incidents, adhering to guidelines from the Florida Department of Health.
