OUT WITH THE OLD,
IN WITH THE NEW:
UPGRADE OF DISTRICT PHONES
The Palm Beach County School District is undergoing an overhaul of
school phone systems. The existing antiquated analog system is being
replaced with an internet protocol digital system called SIP (Session Initiated
Protocol), otherwise known as Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP). The
new system will be rolled out during the new FY20 school year to the entire
School District. This upgrade will result in more reliable service, improved
functionality, and additional features.
An upgrade of this magnitude is sure to cause changes to the way District
staff use the phone system. The most significant change will be to the
dialing patterns. Other changes are:
• A “1” for long distance and a “9” to obtain an outside line will no longer
be required.
• When calling an internal contact, phones will only be accessible using
the seven-digit phone number. PX numbers are not offered for use in the
new system.
• The new phone system will enhance security as well as communication.
Additionally, recording functionality will be possible at each Call Center
location.
• Contact lists can be managed on the phone and desktop computer for
easy access to frequently called numbers.
• Physical phone devices as well as soft phones (computer based phones
with headsets) will be available based upon department or schools
needs and usage.
Training for the new phone system will be available as the system is
rolled out.
