Neglected Group Homes Educational Supports and Services
The tutorial program provides after-school tutoring and mentoring for students who reside in neglected
residential group homes scattered throughout Palm Beach County. The primary goal is to provide quality
supplementary academic supports aligned to the long-term outcomes of the District’s Strategic Plan to
positively impact student achievement. District-certified part-time in-system teachers serve as tutors, and
they utilize relevant instructional materials, robust student data, and effective learning strategies to help
these students grow academically.
Nearly all of the group home students have faced significant trauma, while some students are also extremely
transient. These two challenges can greatly impact educational progress. Understanding these common
characteristics, the tutorial program operates with these students’ unique needs in mind. The tutors use
evidenced-based tools designed to improve the academic performance of at-risk and highly-mobile students.
In addition, state, District, and classroom data are analyzed to help identify and ameliorate specific skill
deficits to boost academic proficiency and close the achievement gap between neglected and non-neglected
students.
The structured tutoring program focuses on skill remediation, computer-assisted instruction, mentoring, and
homework assistance. To promote fidelity of the program, tutors must provide consistent tutoring sessions
for the duration of a student’s stay at the group home, regularly communicate with the classroom teacher,
and submit weekly lesson plans. Each group home operates differently, but the missions are similar with the
offering of comprehensive programs and on-going residential treatment. The tutorial program is flexible,
adaptive, and works in partnership with eligible neglected facilities to provide a quality educational service to
meet the varied needs of these students.
Tutorial services were expanded into the virtual realm in FY21 in order to continue to meet student needs
during the COVID-19 pandemic.
