School Psychological Services is a team of approximately 130 school psychologists who provide a broad
range of comprehensive and integrated services to meet the needs of students and families through a Multi-
Tiered System to Support (MTSS). Through direct student support and ongoing consultation and collaboration
with teachers, families, and other school-based mental health professionals, school psychologists apply
expertise in learning, behavior, and mental health to provide a continuum of services to support improved
student outcomes. They are uniquely qualified members of school teams who provide direct and indirect
support services in the areas of data collection and analysis, psychological assessment and evaluation, progress
monitoring, identification of resilience and risk factors, development of academic/learning interventions,
prevention and intervention services, behavior and mental health interventions, special education services,
and mental health crisis intervention support.
School psychologists responded to the challenges presented during the COVID-19 Pandemic by adapting
and adjusting school psychological service delivery to include a combination of both in-person and remote
strategies, as guided by professional best practices. During the Spring of 2020, school psychologists provided
over 836 virtual wellness checks with students and families and provided over 250 virtual professional
development sessions to schools on a variety of mental health related topics to help support the mental
health needs of students during the Distance Learning period.
School psychologists and other school-based mental health professionals also provided continued mental
health crisis support for students, families, and school communities following crisis events involving loss, grief,
and psychological trauma. During FY21, school psychologists worked with school-based mental health teams
to provide direct mental health crisis intervention and support for over 25 school-associated crisis events
requiring additional District-level Crisis Team support. Through swift pivoting to an online training platform,
school-based mental health professionals and other crisis intervention team members received continued
crisis response training utilizing the PREPaRE model. This model is a comprehensive and internationally
recognized curriculum developed specifically to address school crisis management and to provide Crisis Team
members with a uniform and systematic approach to meet the mental health needs of students and school
communities following crisis events.
