Sustainability Advisory Committee
The District launched its first Sustainability Advisory Committee. The mission of the Advisory Committee is
to advise, develop, and implement sustainable initiatives including efficient operating practices, resource
conservation, and environmental education opportunities as part of an integrated Sustainability Action Plan
benefiting all District schools and facilities. Several internal departments are represented on the Advisory
Committee, including:
• Risk & Benefits Management • Building Code Services
• Teaching and Learning • Facilities Management/Construction
• Maintenance & Plant Operations • Chief Operating Office
• Environmental & Conservation Services • School Food Service
• Transportation Services • Communications
Earth Day
The District’s Fulton-Holland Educational Services
Center participated in its first ever “Go Green Energy
Challenge: Battle of the Wings”. The 3 wings
competed in a challenge to complete energy exercises
of the day. Activities included task lighting instead of
using overhead lights, unplugging electronics when
not in use, shutting down computers at the end of
the day and turning off the lights when rooms are
unoccupied. Over 100 participants completed the
activities. Additionally, schools across the District
celebrated Earth Day events which included clean
ups, recycling campaigns, gardening activities, and
beautification projects to name a few.
FL Green District Awards
ECS led the School Sustainability initiative and worked with several other departments, including Teaching
and Learning, School Food Service, and Maintenance and Plant Operations to gather data for the application.
As such, the District was presented with a 2021 Gold Level Florida Green School District Award. The annual,
statewide award was created to recognize, support and promote sustainability practices in school districts
that enhance the quality of education while preserving the environment.
The GOLD ranking is the highest ranking earned and is awarded to Districts that work to conserve natural
resources, promote sustainability and reduce operating costs. The ranking is determined by the Florida Green
School Network, a partnership between the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida
Department of Education, the Florida Department of Health, and Sustainable Florida. In September 2021, the
District was featured on a webinar, along with other District awardees, to share best practices in sustainability.
