District’s First Sustainability Symposium for Green Champions
On March 21, 2022, The Environmental & Conservation Services (ECS) Department offered professional
development through the District’s first Sustainability Symposium for Green Champion teachers.
The Symposium was held at Mounts Botanical
Garden and was sponsored in part by the Education
Foundation of Palm Beach County and Whole Foods
Market, who provided brunch, orchid awards,
and raffle prizes. Welcome remarks were given by
Board Member, Mrs. Erica Whitfield. Guest speakers
included, Mr. Paul Strauss, former Director of The
Environmental & Conservation Services Department;
Ms. Megan Houston, Director, Palm Beach County's
Office of Resilience; and Ms. Mary Wonzy, Assistant
Sustainability Planner, City of Delray Beach. Ms.
Chelsea Odum, Director of Education & Artist
Relations at Resource Depot facilitated a hands-on
reuse workshop called Junk-a-Gram.
Ten (10) schools were recognized for earning Green Designation through the Florida Department of
Environmental Protection’s Green Apple Awards. This program recognizes schools that make a commitment
to conserve and protect Florida’s natural resources. Schools that have been awarded Green Designation
create a healthier environment for students, employees and communities.
Thirty-one (31) schools and their Green Champions were recognized for setting school-wide sustainability
goals as part of their Sustainable School Action Plans. Green Champions also earned a $200 stipend to
purchase classroom supplies that support environmental education. This program is coordinated by ECS
to showcase school-wide goals that are implemented in the areas of Environmental Education, Energy and
Water Conservation, Waste Reduction and Recycling, Environmentally Preferable Purchasing, Healthy Schools,
and Recognition.
Interpretive Signage
ECS collaborates with schools to develop interpretive
nature signage for installation in campus wetlands and
preserves, which provides outdoor classrooms with
educational opportunities for student enrichment.
In FY22, ECS worked in partnership with the City of
Boynton Beach to install brand new signs for a nature
trail at the Galaxy Sand Pine Scrub, which is used
by students at neighboring Galaxy E3 Elementary.
This project inspired Acreage Pines Elementary, who
unveiled a nature trail for the school’s Wet Prairie
and Pine Flatwood Preserve area. The school worked
closely with the Environmental & Conservation Services
Department to develop interpretive nature trail signs.
