Indoor Air Quality
Environmental & Conservation Services’ (ECS) Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) program is an integral component
of the department’s mission to provide healthy, sustainable, learning and working environments for all
students, staff and visitors to District facilities.
The IAQ program provides services directly to school centers through IAQ assessments and environmental
remediation projects related to hazards such as water damage, mold, odors, infectious disease, fire, flood
response, and natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornados, heavy inundations, and/or localized flooding.
During the FY22 school year, IAQ staff completed a total of 481 IAQ field inspections at 169 schools and 13
ancillary facilities. ECS oversaw the work of 5 consultants and 6 contractors who in total provided services
on 355 IAQ related projects.
ECS managed the District contract for Indoor Air Quality and Infectious Disease Services, and provides
sanitizing support to schools and other District facilities following the guidance of the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Florida Department of Health Epidemiology department, Health
Care District, and/or the School District’s Health Services Specialist. During the FY22, ECS logged 9,806
Infectious Disease incidents, of which 9,785 incidents were COVID-19 related and 21 incidents were for
other Infectious Diseases. ECS provided sanitizing support utilizing environmental contractors for 118
infectious disease incidents. ECS also facilitated the purchase of 13,000 portable air purifier units for District
classrooms, and 300+ disinfecting equipment to schools and ancillary facilities.
ECS staff certified in asbestos program management successfully coordinated nine (9) asbestos abatement
projects, five (5) demolitions (including two whole-school abatement/demolition projects), and supported
Facility Construction modernization projects with sampling, analysis, abatement and demolition additional
facility renewal and minor projects. ECS schedules and maintains the records for the asbestos regulatory
mandated 3-year facility inspections conducted at twenty-three (23) schools, including continuing
education training for custodial staff responsible for the upkeep of those facilities.
