The American Heart Association (AHA) continues to be a valuable partner in our efforts to promote garden
education and healthy eating. This past year they worked with first and third grade students from Westward
Elementary to harvest collard greens and peppers. They also worked with students at Hammock Pointe
Elementary to amend the garden soil, plant vegetable, herb, and tea seedlings to refresh multiple garden
beds. As they worked, the AHA staff talked to the students about the heart-healthy benefits of fresh herbs
        and vegetables.

At S.D. Spady Elementary the AHA worked with the students of the school’s large garden club who
enthusiastically helped plant multiple beds of vegetable and herb seedlings, learned about heart-healthy
fresh foods, how to grow their own food, as well as how to maintain their garden beds.

Four days of Art & Healthy Hearts events were held by the AHA at the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden in West
Palm Beach. Several groups of elementary students came to learn about eating healthy foods and how to
grow their own food in the garden. They had a healthy “rainbow salad,” tasted many fresh vegetables and
herbs, and had a lively discussion about what fruits and vegetables were their favorites.

The AHA also hosted a Garden Day at the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden, welcoming 180 kindergarten through
third grade students from Pahokee, Belle Glade and West Palm Beach. Students visited multiple stations to
learn different facets of gardening, tasted and over learned about the heart-healthy benefits of sprouts and
        microgreens.
