Securing Resources for Excellence Through Innovation and
Preservation of Our History
The School Board and the City of West Palm Beach partnered to pursue historic designation for four architecturally
significant buildings on the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts campus. Historic designation of these buildings made
the District’s property eligible for an innovative program offered by the City under the Transfer of Development Rights
(TDR) program designed to encourage the preservation of historic structures and urban open space. As part of the TDR
transaction and partnership with the City, the District received $8.3 million for improvements to the Alexander W. Dreyfoos
School of the Arts campus and other historically significant properties owned by the District.

The preservation of these historic buildings demonstrate the District’s commitment to preserving essential aspects of our
history and attaining needed capital resources. The TDR sold to developers will enable the construction of many additional
affordable housing units in the downtown area of West Palm Beach. As the largest employer in Palm Beach County, the
District has a vested interest in ensuring adequate, affordable housing to support its workforce.
