In addition to contracting enhanced sanitization services as necessary shifts in response to the COVID-19
pandemic, ECS purchased infectious disease supplies, which were provided to schools and facilities on an
as-needed basis:
• Disinfecting equipment
• Electrostatic precipitators
• HEPA air filtration devices
• Personal protection equipment (PPE): Face masks, N-95 respirators, nitrile gloves
Furthermore, ECS conducted product safety reviews and developed COVID-19 best management practices.
To support the District’s commitment to environmental stewardship, ECS provided oversight on wetland
preserve management, including protected species such as Bats, Burrowing Owls, and Gopher Tortoises. ECS
played an integral role in addressing environmental compliance issues throughout the planning phases of
new school construction.
Additionaly, ECS provided recognition of exemplary effort through a Custodial Achievement Award. This
award recognizes those who go above and beyond to create and maintain healthy learning and working
environments. ECS also provided recognition through a Student Achievement Award for those who supported
green initiatives and cultivated environmental stewardship in the schools.
Green Schools Recognition Program
The Green Schools Recognition Program, announced its 2021 Green Schools. The program is coordinated by
FAU Pine Jog Environmental Education Center (PJEEC) in partnership with the Districts of Martin County and
Palm Beach County. Green Schools promote a positive and supportive school climate through environmental
stewardship initiatives, which include: School Grounds Enhancement, School Sustainability, Health and Well-
being, Curriculum Integration, Community Involvement and School-Wide Culture.
In FY21, the program recognized113 schools, of which 76 District schools were among those earning a
prestigious Green Schools status. The recognized schools can the viewed HERE.
The Green Student of the Year was from Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts. The Green Teacher
of the Year was from Gove Elementary. Each recipient earned a $500 award sponsored by FAU Pine Jog
Environmental Education Center. The Green Facilities Staff Member of the Year was from Palm Springs
Middle and received a $500 award sponsored by the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County (SWA).
Fourteen (14) of our schools earned Community Mini Grants ranging from $250-$500 and nine (9) of our
schools earned a $450 SWA 4R Mini Grant.
ECS sponsored two Sustainable Champions Choice awards under the Community Mini Grants category.
Sustainable Champions Choice awardees must spend the awarded money in one of the following areas:
waste reduction and recycling, water and energy conservation, green fundraising, health and well-being and
alternative transportation (biking, walking etc.). These practices help to reduce operating costs for the District
as well as reduce our impact on the environment. The two schools recipients were Jupiter Elementary and
Glades Central Community High.
In addition, the District’s Wellness Promotion Task Force sponsored two other Sustainable Champions Choice
awards under the Community Mini Grants category only to be centered around Health & Well-being initiatives
– recipients were Crossroads Academy and Royal Palm School.
