Promote nutrition education - 2 of 5 years
During the 2014-2015 school year, the School Food Service (SFS) Department concentrated efforts to build up and enhance the opportunities for nutrition education. A dedicated webpage was designed to be a resources for various nutrition education topics which included: The OrganWise Guys (OWG), MyPlate, Grants and Contests, and Teacher and Parent Resources. To keep the content fresh and new, information on each topic was updated monthly.

Throughout the school year, the SFS Department participated in a number of nutrition related outreach opportunities such as hosting assemblies, classroom lectures, career days, and community and school based health promotion events. A SharePoint list was created to help streamline and document the nutrition education opportunities.

At the elementary level, the Department continued to promote The OrganWise Guys. Two school-based assemblies were held during the year. The first one was at Seminole Trails Elementary on September 26th and students learned about healthy eating and everyone enjoyed an apple at the end. The second assembly was held on January 22nd at Grassy Waters Elementary and students learned about MyPlate and the two Foods of the Month – Cruciferous Vegetables and Legumes. In addition, to the assemblies the Department infused the OrganWise Guys program into a presentation given at the Learn Green Conference. The presentation was titled “Incorporating Nutrition Education into the School Day.”

To promote National Nutrition Month (NNM) during the month of March, a dedicated webpage was designed to provide information to all stakeholders regarding this important initiative. In addition, each school received a packet which included a flyer and table tents to be displayed on the serving line and educational pamphlets.

In May 2015, a dedicated webpage for Food Allergy Action Month was created to provide nutrition education regarding food allergies. A packet was put together for all school sites which included three different flyers that were to be displayed on the serving line or throughout the school, morning announcements, the district's press release and an educational activity sheet for elementary schools. The allergy awareness education was so well received, we decided to continue providing that important information on the website. It can be found in the section of Allergy Awareness.
