Behavioral Health Focused Pilot Project
In FY21, the School District of Palm Beach County’s Choice and Career Options Department, in collaboration
with all stakeholders and guidance from community partners in education including School Board Members,
Deputy Superintendent/Chief of Schools, Chief Academic Officer, Chief of Staff, Assistant Superintendents,
Behavioral and Mental Health Department, Principals, Medical Academy Teachers, and community partners
surveyed and discussed during several meetings the need of creating and implementing a Career and
Technical Education Behavioral Health Secondary Program to help with the mental health crisis and the new
state requirements in mental health mandated for secondary students.
Together, the District and community partners with the leadership and direction of Dr. Miguel Benavente,
Health and Medical Science Specialist, started a Behavioral Health Taskforce to begin the development process
for a new secondary state program in health sciences. The Behavioral Health Focused Pilot Project was created
and implemented at five (5) high schools (with high diversity and inclusion population), to impact all socio-
economic sectors of the community. Seven (7) Allied Health Assisting Program teachers volunteered to
implement the pilot at the five High Schools:
