National School Lunch Week was celebrated nation wide the week of October 14-17, 2013. We celebrated National School Lunch Week in Palm Beach County by purchasing kits (below) and developing a poster (left) for School Food Service Managers to place on the serving line during the week. 86 schools participated in this promotion and lunch participation increased district wide by 15,508 (4.15%) from the prior week.

Palm Beach County set sail on the marketing campaign developed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to celebrate Florida School Breakfast Week. We obtained and distributed posters (below left), purchased items for kit (below right), and provided kits to 97 schools.

Four schools Jerry Thomas Elementary, Glades Central High School, Morikami Elementary and Conniston Middle School received awards for their entries to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services contest.

The third annual Wellness Celebration was organized by the School Food Service Department with the assistance of various other departments. School Food Service was responsible for participant invitations (left), door prizes, menu development, decorations, staffing to assist with set up, and station manning.

The Wellness Celebration is an opportunity to thank all of our partners who have led the charge of wellness for students and staff throughout the year. It provided another opportunity to share with others the importance of wellness.

The 100th day of school has traditionally been highlighted in elementary schools and School Food Service has joined in the fun this year. All elementary school students who participated in lunch on the 100th day of school in January 2014 were offered free of charge a 100 calorie goldfish snack. A poster was developed for this promotion (left).

It is important to communicate our services to potential new customers. This year all elementary school Food Service Managers attended the Kindergarten Round Ups at their schools. We provided each manager with a Kindergarten Round Up Kit. The kit included a Kid's First Banners (below), aprons, buttons, 8 1/2 X 11 poster (right), business cards (below), activity sheets for students, and a script for the managers. Additionally we collected names and addressed of parents who would like our School Year 2014-2015 Marketing Booklet mail to them this summer.

In years past we have mailed home a marketing flyer containing some limited information about our program. This year we developed and mailed a sixteen page comprehensive Marketing Booklet to all households in July 2013. We believe that a large percentage of our increase in participation can be attributed to the distribution of this marketing booklet.

An increase of 55,000 meals would make our return on investment a success. We have seen and increase of 1,339,000 meals this year making this marketing booklet well worth the time and money. The School Year 2014-2015 Marketing Booklet has already been developed and will be mailed in July 2014.

In order to remain successful, marketing must be performed internally as well as externally to customers. Our program was promoted internally to staff this year by providing Kids First T-shirts at the beginning of the school year as part of their uniform and Kids First pins were provided as a thank you gift at year end.
