After observing the positive changes the High School Cafeteria Pilot Program (HSCPP) had on the student behavior both in the cafeteria and throughout the day, School Food Service (SFS) saw the need to pilot a smaller version of the program at the middle school level. Principal Corey Brooks of John F. Kennedy Middle School (JFK) reached out to SFS looking to provide an atmosphere for his students that would recharge his students for the second half of the day. Our answer was the development and implementation of a middle school re-engineering program.
JFK was selected and due to the collaborative effort by Facility Services, School Food Service, Sisca Construction Services, and the Tercilla-Courtemanche Architect Firm; the project was successfully completed for the first day of school on August 20, 2012. The Grand Opening was held on August 15, 2012; District Leadership, School Administration and Staff, Community Partners and School Food Service attended the event.
When the doors opened for the first day of school the students’ were excited for the increase in menu offerings and enhancement to their cafeteria. Currently, on average, JFK serves 45 additional meals each day with a total of 85% of the students participating in the lunch program.
